enterprise findability

enterprise findability

The search solution allows people within the global SKF organisation to easily get access to all types of information, regardless of location. The findability application serves as a single-point-of-access to the information, with a usable interface to encourage user interaction and knowledge sharing. The functionality has been developed over time with focus on true user requirements and business value. All retrieved information is also categorised into a SKF specific taxonomy.

The application has been operational for five years and it has been a success! In the organisational paradigm shift, in which SKF has turned from traditional industry company to a knowledge engineering company, the search application has been a key support for information retrieval to all employees, thereby increasing work efficiently and allowing capitalisation of the in-house corporate wisdom. Today more than 8.000 unique users per month are using the application, and together they are asking more than 80.000 queries per month. 96% of the users find the information that they get both relevant and useful. 87% save time in their daily work because of the application.

Västra Götalandsregionen (VGR) is the second largest health care organization in Sweden with 50,000 employees and a 42 billon SEK turn over. VGR has a complex IT-architecture with several content management systems, this partly due to a merge of health care organisations in the west of Sweden. This means users often have to navigate different information sources to find what they are looking for. To resolve this problem a search engine had been installed and setup. However, the lack of functionality for filtering search results made it hard for users to drill down in the often very large result set. VGR also wanted to cut license costs and be able to share their investments in development with other health care organizations throughout Sweden.

In order to meet requirements, Findwise designed and developed a Findability solution built on the open source search engine Apache Solr. Apache Solr provided excellent scalability and flexibility, which was a perfect fit to VGR’s heterogeneous environment with many users. Since Solr is very capable at its core but limited in functionality much was developed and added including; search interface, information refinement framework, search statistics gathering and various connectors for connecting to data sources. The findability solution replaced a commercial search platform with a lower cost than two years’ worth of support fees of the previous platform. At the same time usability, functionality and performance have been improved. Users find what they are looking for faster and easier! User response has been very positive and the solution has been received as a great improvement in Findability.

Wolters Kluwer Scandinavia (WKS) is a leading information publishing and software company, specializing in legal, tax, accounting and public administration. The company has customers in both private and public sector. Wolters Kluwer Scandinavia consists of Norstedts Juridik in Sweden, Magnus Informatik in Denmark and Akelius in Norway. They provide online information and software products, used by legal and accounting professionals in their everyday work. Many of these products are search driven, containing millions of articles, pages and documents. A challenge for WKS is to ensure that their online environments meet demands and to avoid instability and performance problems affecting users.

Findwise continuous work with WKS’s Enterprise Search platform has improved availability and search quality. It has also resulted in saved costs as operational problems can be identified early. "System downtime has been reduced to a minimal since Findwise was involved in the development and governance of our Enterprise Search platform”, says Halbe Huitema, Manager Online Platforms at Wolters Kluwer Scandinavia.
